Before magnetos were first introduced in 1914 rowboat motors used batteries and coils to make spark. The old system began to disappear in 1914-1915 when Evinrude, Caille and other major manufacturers introduced magnetos, which took over almost completely by the early '20s.

BUT, the magnetos were more expensive than the battery box set up so they were offered as a more expensive option for some time.

Caille Liberty Singles were available with the battery option until the very end of that model in 1931.
